With Thanksgiving around the corner where you celebrate the harvest and other blessings of the year. As we approach the year-end, it’s time to reflect on the year that went by. We don’t have a failure either we have learnt from our mistakes or we have the best year. While many may not have the best year but Thanksgiving sets us in the right tone till New Year. Thanksgiving engrained quality of expressing gratitude.
Gratitude origins from the Latin word “gratia” which translates to gratefulness. Through gratitude we humans appreciate the what we have as individuals in our life either tangible or intangible. This process of looking for goodness, in general, relates to happiness and positivity in life. As per the law of attraction, we amplify what we focus and think. No wonder there is a festival which helps us on consciously focus on what we want to attract in our lives. It’s not only for individuals, but it also lets you build a good rapport with other people. Appreciation leads to positive interaction. Express your gratefulness to people for all their contributions and actions, see the relationship bonding to the next level. You are more likely to have people like you when they are in a position to help you. So next time instead of acting a know it all learn to ask for help. Being grateful irrespective of the situation helps us to see the opportunity behind the problem.
“Find the good and praise it “~ Alex Haley
When we are focused on the looking for goodness around, our focus from negativity reduces.
“Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy — because we will always want to have something else or something more” ~Brother David Steindl-Rast
But is gratitude only for a personal life? Let’s see what happens when we apply rules of gratitude in the workplace. The workplace is generally considered to be one of the most stressful. Think about the problem and consider the stress level on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the least and 10 being the most. Now, start to think about the 3 things you are thankful in the very moment. With this feel-good emotions, check the stress levels on the count of 1 to 10. If this can happen immediately, imagine if we cultivate the culture of the gratitude not only employees well-being increases but also their productivity and job satisfaction. Give out praises freely to see. One activity till date I cherish which I did in one of the careers was writing thanking notes on the card, attaching ribbons for all 10 people of the team. We were the team used to working in high pressure and something were expected from us. I still remember the feeling each one got after seeing the personalized card on their table hanging with colourful ribbons and cursive writing. Instead of moving from the project and without thinking about it, learn to celebrate the recent win. You are setting the tone of the upcoming work environment of more collaboration. Instead of giving feedback or why don’t we give feedforward where instead of focusing on the past you look for their future and help them develop skills and behaviours.
So in short, gratitude is one of the powerful practices which helps in an immediate shift in mindset and emotions state. I would recommend having a gratitude journal in which at least on weekly basis write what you are thankful and see the shift in your life. If you want to test it, why don’t you try for a week continuously these could be very simple things like keeping a promise to yourself, waking up on time, thanking yourself and others. Count your many blessings , every doubt will fly.
“Gratitude is riches. Complaint is poverty. ~ Doris Day “
